Method name and description

UV test : Enzymatic reference method with hexokinase.

Hexokinase catalyzes the phosphorylation of glucose toglucose‑6‑phosphate by ATP. Glucose‑6‑phosphate dehydrogenase oxidizes glucose‑6‑phosphate in thepresence of NADP to gluconate‑6‑phosphate. No other carbohydrate is oxidized. The rate of NADPH formation during the reaction is directlyproportional to the glucose concentration and is measured photometrically.

Clinical information

Glucose is the major carbohydrate present in the peripheral blood. The glucose level in CSF is proportional to the blood glucose level and corresponds to 60-70% of the concentration in blood. CSF glucose levels can be useful in distinguishing among causes of meningitis and evaluation of neoplastic involvement of meninges and other neurological disorders.
