Medications
Bringing Medications
When admitted to hospital, it is essential for safety and well-being that patients bring all medication currently being taken. Please follow these guidelines:
-
Bring medications in original containers
Ensure that all medications are brought in their original containers. This helps the healthcare team verify and understand the medication history of a patient accurately.
-
Show medications to the nurse upon arrival
Upon arriving at the hospital, present all medications to the assigned nurse. This step is crucial for the hospital staff to manage medications effectively throughout a stay.
-
Take only prescribed medications during hospitalization
During any hospital stay, only take medications prescribed by the physician. Avoid taking any other medications unless approved by the healthcare provider.
Handling Medications
When a patient brings medications to the hospital, the assigned nurse is responsible for receiving and reviewing these medications. The process includes the following steps:
-
Receipt
The nurse will document the source of each medication (e.g. brought by the patient, family member, legal guardian or legal representative).
-
Identification
The nurse will identify each medication, ensuring that all are correctly labeled and match the patient's medication list.
-
Storage
Medications will be stored safely and securely as per hospital policy to ensure they are available when needed and to prevent any potential misuse or loss.
