Dr. Mahir Petkar has over 20 years of experience as a histopathologist. He joined Hamad General Hospital in September 2017 as a Senior Consultant Histopathologist in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP). He is currently the Vice Chair for Anatomic Pathology in DLMP and is also the Hepatobiliary and Upper Gastrointestinal Lead Histopathologist. In addition, he is the Training Program Director for the Histopathology Training Program in HMC.
After completing his primary qualification in India, Dr Petkar passed the MD Pathology in 2000, before moving to the UK, where he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Certificate of Completion of Training in 2006, entering the Specialist Register in 2007.
Dr. Petkar started his consultant career in 2007 at Broomfield Hospital, Essex, U.K., where he was the Lead Head and Neck Cancer pathologist for the Mid-Essex region. During this period, he also developed a special interest in other pathology subspecialties (dermatopathology, hepatobiliary pathology and gastrointestinal pathology) and the utility of precision medicine in the treatment of various cancers in these sites.
