Introduction
The Department of Anesthesia, ICU and Perioperative Medicine provides 24/7 perioperative care for all patients undergoing any type of surgical or procedural interventions in HMC. The department under the Chairmanship of Dr Hilani oversees the perioperative care provided under all the sites of HMC where surgical or procedural or diagnostic interventions under sedation takes place.
Anesthesia department is a multidisciplinary department with highly trained anesthesiologists supported by anesthesia technicians. The department comprises of 220 highly trained anesthesiologists and 159 anesthesia technicians and 25 fellows 40 anesthesia residents in training.
Just in the year 2022 alone the department provided anesthesia for 45,527 patients of which 29,463 were general anesthesia.
The following are some of the main services provided by the department
- Pre-operative assessment of all patients undergoing anesthesia or sedation
- Intra operative care (all forms of anesthesia) of all patients undergoing general anesthesia or sedation
- Peri operative and post-operative care of all surgical patients
- The department provides intensive care for surgical patients through the Surgical Intensive Care which is run from three different sites - Hamad General hospital, Al Wakra Hospital, and Ambulatory Care Center
- Resuscitative services for Trauma patients
- Resuscitative services for critically ill patients
- Acute pain management
- Advanced chronic pain management through pain clinics
