DLMP Risk Management System

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) has a strong commitment to integrating risk management into all aspects of its laboratory processes in accordance with international standards. The Department has a robust risk management program that is aligned to that of the Hamad Medical Corporation and is an integral part of the governance framework of the DLMP. Underpinning the program is the vision of the Chair of Clinical Services-DLMP to ensure that our processes and procedures are delivered in a safe and effective manner that mitigates all risks and enhances patient care and clinical outcomes.

The Department operates on the principle that risk management is everyone’s business. Our primary objective is to support a working environment where identifying and managing risks is embedded as part of the culture for all DLMP staff, is relevant to all laboratory activities and enhances the quality of the services that we provide.

Our risk management system is based on the following key processes:

  • Establishing the context
  • Identifying the risks
  • Analyzing and evaluating risks
  • Treating/managing the risks
  • Monitoring and reviewing the risks

All divisions, sections and other services within DLMP undertake regular risk assessments to identify and mitigate risks effectively. This takes into consideration the harm that risks may cause (to patients, other service users, DLMP staff and laboratory services), quantifies this risk in terms of likelihood and impact and then identifies effective control mechanisms to mitigate these risks. Risk management within the DLMP is a dynamic process; all risks are documented in risk registers, progress on actions to mitigate risks is monitored regularly and residual risk is determined once actions are fully implemented.

The DLMP has a number of policies and procedures to support all aspects of risk management. This includes procedures for the identification and escalation of high-ranking risks that may have an immediate and/or severe impact on patient care and/or DLMP services. These are supported by robust governance processes and oversight to ensure effective implementation.
