Graduated from the Medical School of Free University Berlin, Germany in 1987. Subsequent clinical training in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Charlottenburg, Berlin. Board certifications: Internal Medicine; Nephrology; Medical Intensive Care. Appointed full Professor of Medicine at Charité University Hospital Berlin in July 2003. From 2009 until March 2016 Acting Director of the Department of Nephrology and Medical Intensive Care at Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum. In April 2016 appointed Director of the Department of Medicine I (Nephrology, Transplantation & Medical Intensive Care) at University Witten/Herdecke Medical Center Cologne-Merheim, Germany, and Chair of Internal Medicine II at University Witten/Herdecke, Witten, Germany.

Primary clinical areas are critical care nephrology, intensive care medicine, sepsis/multi-organ failure, and extracorporeal therapies. Primary interests in basic/laboratory research include peritoneal membrane biology and inflammation.

Prof. Jörres is part of the DIVI’s (German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine) Chapter on “AKI and Acute Renal Replacement Therapies” and member of the German Sepsis Society’s Guideline Committee. He is a founding member of EuroPD e.V. and co-organiser of the European Peritoneal Dialysis Meetings (http://www.europd.com) since 1994, currently serving as EuroPD Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer. He published more than 200 original papers, review articles and book chapters in the fields of Nephrology and Intensive Care Medicine and serves as a regular reviewer for many scientific journals in the area.
