Mariette Awad is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon, a member of the AUB Senate, and Director of AUB’s Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Computing Hub. A top 2% most-cited researcher (Stanford/Elsevier listing), she focuses on AI for impact - developing trustworthy machine learning methods for healthcare and other high-stakes settings, including clinical prediction, multimodal modeling, and evaluation approaches that improve reliability under real-world constraints such as data scarcity, bias, and distribution shift.

An award-winning scholar, she received the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award for Arab Researchers (2023) and the Intissar Ahdab Award for Women’s Excellence and Impact in Research (2024) and is the author of the bestselling book Efficient Learning Machines. Beyond academia, she advises healthcare startups on responsible AI strategy and deployment and is also a health-tech startup founder, bringing an operator’s perspective on translating AI innovation into measurable clinical impact.
