He currently serves as a Senior Consultant Pathologist at Hamad Medical Corporation since 2017, where he plays a crucial role in providing high-quality diagnostic services and contributing to the field of pathology.

From 2010 to 2017, Dr. Akhtar held a significant position as a Professor of Pathology and Director of Renal Pathology and renal fellowship program at the renowned King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
