The Department of Nephrology and Medical Intensive Care (http://niere.charite.de) comprises 45 beds general nephrology & transplantation, a dialysis service, and an ICU with 24 beds. A particular focus is the patient with multi-organ failure where a wide range of extracorporeal treatments is performed including all acute renal replacement modalities, extracorporeal liver support therapy (PrometheusTM-FPSA; SPAD), extracorporeal cytokine adsorbtion (CytoSorb), and plasma separation with or without immunoadsorption. Patients with ALI/ARDS are treated with arterio-venous or veno-venous extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECCO2-R) or either veno-venous or veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In addition, the department heads the Charité Cardiac Arrest Center of Excellence (http://cardiacarrest.charite.de) where more than 100 patients/year are treated after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest using standardized protocols including therapeutic hypothermia. More than 30 patients/year in whom no ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) could be achieved pre-clinically, extracorporeal life support using LifebridgeTM technology is established as a bridge to ROSC and to enable advanced diagnostics and treatment.
Prof. Jörres is speaker for the DIVI’s (German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine) Chapter on “AKI and Acute Renal Replacement Therapies” and member of the German Sepsis Society’s Guideline Committee. He is a founding member of EuroPD e.V. and co-organiser of the European Peritoneal Dialysis Meetings (http://www.europd.com) since 1994, currently serving as EuroPD Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer.
