Prof. Gieler completed his MD and residency training in the Department of Dermatology at Philipps University, Marburg, Germany. He is certified in dermatology, venerology, allergology, psychosomatic medicine and environmental medicine and is currently a Professor of Dermatology and Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany, a position he has held since 1995 and which led to his appointment as Vice-Chair of the department in 2015.

Prof Gieler is Chair of the Outpatient Dept. of Dermatology at the University of Giessen in Germany, Chair of the Atopic Dermatitis Education Academy, Hessen-Thüringen and Secretary of the Allergy Prevention Programme in Germany (a government initiative). He is president of the European Society for Dermatology and Psychiatry (ESDaP) and of the German Atopic Dermatitis Education Programmes (AGNES). His is also a member of the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (ETFAD), the German Society of Dermatology (DDG), and the German Society for Psychotherapeutic Medicine (DGPM) and the German Colleges of Psychosomatic Medicine (DKPM) as well as member of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV).

Professor Gieler’s interests lies in the fields of psychodermatology, primarily in the effects of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, body dysmorphic disorders and somatoform disorders, and he has written more than 100 journal articles and book chapters in these fields. He is involved in the coordination of numerous studies in psychodermatology and was responsible for the design of an atopic dermatitis education programme (national multicentre study in Germany, 2001–2004).
