Professor Martin Steinhoff is Chairman of the Dept. of Dermatology and Venereology as well as Director of the Interim Translational Research Center (iTRI) at Hamad Medical Corporation, Clinical Professor at Qatar University, Interim Ass. Professor at Weill-Cornell University Qatar, and New York and Professorial Chair at the UCD Charles Institute, University College Dublin, Ireland. He is also Adjunct Professor at the University of California San Diego, USA.
Professor Steinhoff studied Medicine and Human Biology in Germany where he received his MD, MSc and PhD from the University of Marburg. After residency in Dermatology/Venereology, he became Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Muenster in 2002, rising from assistant to full professor in only 6 years.
He holds board certifications in dermatology, venereology, phlebology and allergy from Germany, in dermatology from the California Medical Board, Irish Medical council, and Qatar Medical Council (QCHP). His clinical fields of interests are atopic eczema/itch, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, wound healing, sclerotherapy and autoimmune diseases.
Prof. Steinhoff is an established physician scientist with a long-standing background in basic and clinical science studying mediators, pathways and their receptors that cause inflammation and auto-inflammatory disease from mechanisms to animal models to human studies and clinical trials.
In a translational fashion, his group has discovered several mechanisms which are now basis for new therapies of skin diseases, published in Nature Medicine or Journal of Clinical Investigation, for example. Review articles about the skin as a neuroimmune organ, pruritus and atopic dermatitis have been published in highly ranked Review journals.
Prof. Steinhoff’s current basic research interests spans Neuroimmunology, Systems Medicine, Cell signaling, -omics technologies, identification of disease biomarkers, and new therapies which has been funded with more than 35 Mio Euro in last 17 years.
To date, his group has published 119 original articles, 58 reviews, 37 book chapters, and more than 200 abstracts; spanning basic science as well as clinical dermatology (Impact factor: 1021.453; H-index 66). He holds 11 patents, has been consultant for > 25 companies, and serves on the scientific advisory board of various dermatology societies and industry partners. He has been P.I. on > 50 grants, 25 clinical trials, and performed several independent human studies that have let to various patents.
For his research, Prof Steinhoff received several prestigious research awards in Germany, USA and Ireland. He is also member of the board of directors of the European Society of Dermatology Research (ESDR), and honorary member of the Hungarian Society of Dermatology.
At Hamad Medical Corporation, WCM-Q and Qatar University Prof. Steinhoff teaches Dermatology and Venereology for students, fellows and residents with high enthusiasm.
