HE Dr. Mohammed Al Maadheed, MD, PhD, is the Healthcare Advisor to His Highness Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Personal Representative of His Highness The Emir. He has held and undertaken key leadership roles in Qatar’s healthcare system. He is the Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors and Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Supreme Council of Health, Qatar. He was appointed as the Chairperson of the Executive Group for a Healthy Population, which was tasked with the development of the Qatar National Health Strategy 2011-2016.
Dr. Al Maadheed is the President of the Qatar Red Crescent and is active in the humanitarian fields and speaks internationally on different humanitarian issues. He has been honoured by organizations worldwide. He was elected and served as the Vice President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent for Asia from 2009 to 2013. He was the Chair of the Board Priorities Oversight Group for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent from 2012 to 2013. Dr. Al Maadheed was a Board Member of the Human Rights Commission of Qatar from 2007 to 2011. He is also a Board Member for the Qatar International Development Fund and Qatar Fund for Social, Humanitarian and Sport Development. He has authored multiple articles and papers and has written and published on the subject of human dignity and other humanitarian issues.
Dr. Al Maadheed has over thirty years’ professional experience, both nationally and internationally, with governments, NGOs and the private sectors in healthcare, sports medicine, anti-doping and humanitarian fields. He is considered a leader in the sports medicine and anti-doping fields in the State of Qatar; he established the first National Sports Medicine Centre in Qatar in 1992. He was instrumental in transforming the vision for a comprehensive sports medicine facility into a new state-of-the-art and purpose-built orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital as Director General of Aspetar, a post he held from 2003 to 2012; during his post, Aspetar attained international recognition when it was accredited as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. Dr. Al Maadheed is a member of the FIFA Medical Committee. He was also the Director General and Project Director of the Anti-doping Lab Qatar, which was inaugurated in December 2012; he continues to provide stewardship as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, receiving WADA accreditation in 2015. He is also the Director General and Project Director of a new ‘greenfield’ state-of-the-art medical facility for addiction treatment and rehabilitation in Qatar.
