Dr Suresh G Nair is the Lead Consultant of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care Department at Aster Medcity in Kochi, India.

A graduate from Trivandrum Medical College and postgraduate from MS University in Baroda, Dr Nair had his initial training in Cardiac Anaesthesia from Apollo Hospital, Chennai under the guidance of Dr Naidu. He started his career at SSG hospital at Baroda as a tutor in-charge of the cardiac anaesthesia department. He later shifted to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute Of Medical Sciences at Trivandrum where he stayed for about 8 years and at the time of resignation held the post of an Associate Professor. At Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences he gained experience in Cardiac and Neuro Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. He then joined Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences at Kochi as a Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and later became the Professor and the Head of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Department for almost 10 years. During this period he was instrumental in developing the Medical Intensive Care Unit, which has now grown into one of the best Medical Intensive Care Units in the state. His interest however was in Pediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and was the pillar on which one of the best Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care units of the country has been built. The unit does about 700 complex pediatric cardiac cases every year. It is also one of the few centers in the country which is doing surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndromes on a regular basis. In 2014, he joined Aster Medcity in Kochi, and is now actively involved in setting up the Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units in this quaternary care center.

Dr Nair has been actively involved with postgraduate training in anaesthesia, including Cardiac Anaesthesia and Critical Care for the last 25 years. He is an examiner for an MD in Anaesthesia, DM in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Fellowship in Cardiac Anaesthesia. His areas of interest include mechanical ventilation, myocardial protection, critical care and specifically pediatric cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care. Dr Nair, a highly respected academician, has delivered about 175 lectures throughout India. He has about 49 publications in International and National journals. He has also contributed to chapters in textbooks about Anaesthesia, Pediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia and Transesophageal Echocardiography.

In recent years he has been the Organizing Chairman for the 17th National Conference of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anaesthesiologists (IACTA). He is also the Past Secretary of IACTA and is now the Registrar of the Indian College of Cardiac Anaesthesia – the academic wing of IACTA.  He is also the Vice President of the Indian Association of Respiratory Care. He has Honorary Fellowships in Transesophageal Echocardiography and in Cardiac Anaesthesia. In 2014, he was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award by the Cochin Heart Foundation in recognition of his contribution to the field of Cardiac Anaesthesia in India.
