Advanced care plan and patient dignity
Advanced care plans provide direction to healthcare professionals when a person is not in a position to make and/or communicate their own healthcare choices. The mere fact that modern physicians are far more likely to be able to influence the course of the illness in a particular way does not mean that the patients necessarily want to accept their suggestions. Enabling and respecting patient decisions [such as their right to opt for trading longevity for quality of life and vice versa], when the patient is mentally capable of making such a decision, is a necessity in a modern healthcare system.
