Dr. David Duthie graduated in Medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 1979 and trained in Anesthesia in Glasgow, Sheffield and Adelaide. He obtained his MD degree​ from the University of Sheffield in 1991. Here he studied rated controlled delivery of opioids to treat pain after surgery.

During consultant posts in Glasgow, Cambridge, Leicester and Leeds, he served on the Council of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthetists, and examined for the Primary and Final examinations at the Royal College of Anesthetists. After three years in clinical management at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, he took up the appointment in 2005 of Deputy Chairman in the Department of Anesthesiology at Hamad Medical Corporation.
