Professor Kulozik obtained his medical degree and his medical doctorate at the University of Münster, Germany. Subsequently, he joined the group of Sir David Weatherall at the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit at the University of Oxford and obtained his PhD. Following a position as a postgraduate clinical fellow and group leader at Ulm University, Germany he was appointed as Professor of Pediatrics at the Charité in Berlin. In 2001 he moved to Heidelberg University to chair the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology. He also initiated the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit, a joint venture of Heidelberg University and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Professor Kulozik's research interests are in the RNA biology of blood diseases of childhood, the analysis of prognostic biomarkers and novel treatment targets of pediatric precursor T-cell leukemia, and the development of novel treatment strategies in osteosarcoma and in developing new treatment options for hereditary anemias in childhood.

Professor Kulozik has published more than 250 papers in the field of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology and coordinates multiple research networks in this field. Professor Kulozik has acted as an advisor and supported the development of clinical research at the Hematology and Oncology Section of the Department of Pediatrics at Hamad Hospital for almost 15 years.
