Dr. Enrique Leira is an experienced Board-certified Vascular Neurologist. He is also an Epidemiologist experienced with clinical research methods and trials, and a translational animal stroke researcher. He is a Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Epidemiology, and the head of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Iowa. Dr. Leira is the principal investigator of the NIH StrokeNet University of Iowa Regional Coordinating Center, a regional infrastructure he built to increase the participation of rural patients from the upper Midwest in NIH stroke trials. Previously, Dr. Leira was the PI for the AIRDOC trial, a pilot cute stroke trial where the intervention was delivered by fair medical crews during inter-hospital transport. In addition, Dr. Leira is the PI for the SPAN, a 6-center NIH research infrastructure conducting multicenter animal trials of stroke neuroprotection.
