Stefano Boriani

Stefano Boriani graduated in 1976 at the University of Bologna Medical School, presenting under the mentorship of Prof. M. Campanacci, a research on Hemangioendothelioma of Bone, which was later published on Cancer.

Since 1984, his activity is mostly focusing on diagnosis and treatment of Spine Tumors. He was appointed as responsible of Spine Tumor treatment at Rizzoli Institute. Later, he was Director of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Ospedale Maggiore in Bologna (Regional Reference Center for Spine Trauma). Since 2009, he was appointed Director of the Department of Oncologic and Degenerative Spine Surgery at Rizzoli Institute in Bologna. All over those years, he dedicated to clinical and surgical activity and clinical research (more than 400 scientific papers and frequent invited lecture worldwide). In a recent published review (la Garza-Ramos De R, Benvenutti-Regato M, Caro-Osorio E. The 100 most-cited articles in spinal oncology. J Neurosurg Spine. 2016 May;24(5):810–23.), reporting on the 100 most cited articles on spine oncology, 6 came from Italy, in 3 of which Stefano Boriani is the first author.

Stefano Boriani was visiting Professor of the Department of Musculoskeletal Oncology Surgery of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (Guangzhou, China) for the period January 2018 to December 2020. He is Associate Editor of: SPINE; European Spine Journal; Journal of Spine Surgery. Further, he is Past Chairman and active member of the AOSpine Knowledge Forum Tumor. He is Honorary Member of the Spine Societies of Israel, Hungary, Columbia, Venezuela.

Stefano Boriani has been appointed since more than 15 years and still active as “Professore a Contratto” at the Post Graduate School of Orthopedics at University of Bologna. He is Principal Investigator/ Responsible of Ministry of Health Finalized Research at Istituto Rizzoli in Bologna.

Stefano Boriani is still active as Director of Spinal Teaching Program and Head of Spine Tumor Surgery at IRCCS Galeazzi in Milano.

His major worldwide recognized contributions in the field of spine tumor, are:
  • The original staging systems for primary tumors, well known as WBB presented in 1996 and now applied by many spine oncologic surgeons worldwide.
  • A Carbon Fiber stackable cage system for Reconstruction after Tumor Excision
  • Original techniques of spine tumor resections 
  • A great number of homogeneous series of spine tumor cases published on peer-reviewed journals
