Dr. Ruthi Landau completed her medical training and anesthesiology residency in Geneva, Switzerland. She then completed an obstetric anesthesia fellowship at Columbia in New York.
She is now the Virginia Apgar Professor of Anesthesiology and serves as the Division Chief of Obstetric Anesthesia at Columbia University in New York.
She served as the President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) in 2020-2021, and is the current chair of the SOAP Centers of Excellence Committee. She has served on the Editorial Board of several Anesthesia Journals and is the new Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia (IJOA).
She has authored over 200 articles, and is a lead author on several consensus statements published by SOAP. She is one of three Editors of the 1st Edition of the Principles and Practice of Maternal Critical Care Textbook published in 2020. She is invited to lecture on genomics and anesthesia, labor analgesia, enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery, maternal morbidity and mortality, and ethnic/racial disparities in maternal health care.
Dr. Landau is a globally recognized researcher, master clinician, academic leader, and mentor in the field. She is a pioneer in the development of opioid-sparing protocols for cesarean delivery and post-operative pain management, work that has had impact across the field of obstetric anesthesia. Dr. Landau’s leadership accomplishments include her role as Director of the Center for Precision Medicine in Anesthesiology, and recent past President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. She is devoted to her mentees and has helped launch the careers of many of the field’s current leaders in obstetric anesthesia.
