Michael Hopmeier is the President of Unconventional Concepts, Inc. Mr. Hopmeier is an internationally recognized expert in the intersection of public health and national/internal security. He has extensive experience in supporting and assisting operations at this nexus, including mass gatherings and massive sporting events. He has worked extensively with the World Health Organization and others addressing issues related to mass gatherings, deliberate use of chemical and biological agents, and disaster/crisis communications. He has supported public health, security, and counter terrorism training and operations throughout the world, including in Thailand, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Turkey, and numerous other countries and regions. He has supported and analyzed events such as World Youth Day 2008, the World and Confederation Cup in South Africa, and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Mr. Hopmeier was one of the key developers of the Mass Gathering Assessment Tool developed by the World Health Organization. In addition, he has been a key leader in WHO programs, acting as a ground operations and security lead in such diverse parts of the world as Greece, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, and many other countries. He has supported projects ranging from massive sporting events (such as the Olympics and the World Cup) to consulting on major United States events, such as NFL games.
In addition, he has been a technical advisor and operational consultant to numerous governmental and international agencies and organizations, including the DARPA Defense Sciences Office, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (formerly Medical Research and Materiel Command), United States Surgeon General, the Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Defense, the World Health Organization, and several foreign governments. He was one of the primary developers of the Bioterrorism Preparedness Program at the CDC, served as the Science and Technology Advisor to the USAF Surgeon General, and was the first S&T Advisor to the United States Marine Corps Chem/Bio Incident Response Force (CBIRF).
Mr. Hopmeier’s current efforts involve countering the use of drones against a wide array of targets, and developing operational requirements for the design, deployment, and use of counter-drone systems. In addition, Mr. Hopmeier is a senior member of the Health/Security Interface Technical Advisory Group (TAG), is a board member of the Board on Army Research, Development, Test & Evaluation, System Acquisition, and Logistics (BARSL), and is currently developing concepts for the foresight and analysis of current and future challenges to public health.
