
Professor Nick Maskell
Nick Maskell has been a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at The University of Bristol (UoB) and an Honorary Consultant at North Bristol NHS Trust since 2004.
He heads the Academic Respiratory Unit and leads the Bristol NIHR-BRC Respiratory theme. He has a national and international reputation in pleural disease.
He is recognized as a national leader in respiratory research, having been awarded a prestigious NIHR senior investigator award.
His research profile includes being the Chief Investigator of multiple NIHR-funded RCT studies, which have changed respiratory practice and improved patient care.
He has built up an extensive national research network based on collaborative working, which now includes over 80 Trusts and grants success of £40 million to try and improve the evidence base of respiratory medicine.
In parallel to the above, Nick has enormously impacted training and guideline-based care. He has led developments in patient safety as an adviser to the RCP and NPSA.
Nick Maskell also helped develop ultrasound training standards and curriculum. He has chaired multiple clinical guidelines impacting treatment worldwide, including the 2023 BTS pleural guidelines.
