Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) today announced a new working relationship with Canadian cancer specialists, the University Health Network/Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (UHN/PM) from Toronto.
As part of HMC’s implementation of the national cancer strategy, they have been looking for a partner who they felt would complement the existing services offered and add value to their overall cancer care. They today signed an agreement with UHN/PM to work together on three key areas: Medical Oncology and Hematology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Nursing and Health Professions.
Dr. Hanan Al Kuwari, Managing Director of HMC said that this was an exciting step in the continuous development of cancer services in Qatar. “At Hamad, we are very proud of the ongoing developments in our cancer services. We now see on average 81 percent of all patients with an urgent suspected cancer referral within 48 hours, which is one of the quickest urgent referral times in the world. But at Hamad we are always looking for ways in which we can improve – we do not want to stand still after success. In order to continue to improve the services we offer to our patients and to accelerate our improvement plans, we have engaged UHN/PM to work with us on some key areas.”
Mr. Ali Al Janahi, Chief of Business Services, represented HMC at the signing ceremony and Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, Medical Director for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre represented UHN/PM, along with Marnie Escaf, UHN/PM Senior Clinical Vice President, who explained the different pieces of work that UHN/PM would be engaging on with HMC.
“In Medical Oncology and Hematology our team will be supporting HMC to make clinics run even more efficiently as well as providing coaching and mentorship to drive inter-disciplinary working. For Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, we are able to draw on the expertise of one of Canada’s largest teaching and academic laboratory programs to deliver educational exchanges with HMC and to support HMC’s vision of delivering personalized medicine. In nursing and health professions, we will be working with the nursing workforce at the National Center for Cancer Care and Research to provide ongoing education so that the nurses there are even better equipped to support the particular specialized needs of cancer patients.”
About the partnership, Marnie Escaf said: “We are very excited to be partnering with one of the leading cancer care providers in the Gulf region and we see this as a great opportunity to work together with the talented team at HMC to implement best practices.”
