For the first time, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Bone and Joint Center offered a Physiotherapy Course alongside the regular examination-focused Qatar Orthopedic Review Course which was held for the third time from 8 to 14 January.

“The Qatar Orthopedic Review Course is a pioneering initiative in the region – it has made high-quality training more accessible for orthopedic residents who previously had to travel abroad in order to prepare for their board exams,” said Course Director Dr. Mohammed Al Khayarin, Senior Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at HMC.

“On 10 and 13 January, we also held our first Qatar Orthopedic Physiotherapy Course specifically for physiotherapists,” said Dr. AbdulAziz Al Kuwari, Orthopedic Spine Consultant at HMC, and one of the course organizers. “This has been a great opportunity for every physical therapist to update their skills and acquire new knowledge in both pediatric and adult orthopedic care. The course covered the physical therapy approach (assessments and rehabilitation) to disorders or injuries of the spine and the upper and lower extremities, as well as the manual therapy techniques used in the field.”

The Bone and Joint Center has been collaborating with faculty from Johns Hopkins Medicine and other leaders in orthopedic care, teaching and research in the United States in providing the Qatar Orthopedic Review Course, which was first offered in January 2014. The review course is supported by HMC’s Medical Education Department and is part of HMC’s strategy for raising the standards of graduate medical education in the region.

The course is popular not only in Qatar but has also attracted many participants from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. Orthopedic residents take the course to prepare for their board examinations including the Arab Board, the Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship examinations, the Saudi Board, and the Jordanian Board. Orthopedists seeking recertification or those who simply want to refresh their knowledge are also encouraged to register for the course in the future by sending an email to orthoreview@hamad.qa.

Speakers included Dr. Mohammed Al Khayarin; Mr. El Adel Bouguerra, Physiotherapy Supervisor at HMC’s Hamad General Hospital and Women’s Hospital; Dr. Anish Kadakia from Northwestern University in Chicago; Dr. Bashir Zikria, Dr. Frank Frassica, Mr. Terrence G. McGee and Ms. Mandi Davis from Johns Hopkins Medicine; Dr. Jeffrey King from Michigan State University; Dr. Francis Shen from the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center; Dr. John Joseph Grayhack from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago; and Dr. Tariq Nayfeh from Medstar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, USA.

Dr. Frank Frassica, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Oncology at the US-based Johns Hopkins University stated, “This is the third time we are holding the course in Doha and I am amazed at the growth of this course. The administration of the course by HMC has been exceptional. The students in the course are superb and the interest from the participants is extraordinary; the desire to learn is quite outstanding. This review course is as good as any in Europe or America.”
