    Doha, 11 August, 2015: Around 4,000 people donated blood during the voluntary blood donation awareness campaign held by Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Blood Donor Center during this year’s Ramadan.
    This was a significant increase compared to the number of blood donors recorded in previous Ramadan voluntary blood donation campaigns organized by HMC. This year’s campaign took place throughout the holy month of Ramadan and Eid ul Fitr holidays.
    The campaign, officially launched at the City Center Doha by Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Al Faisal Without Borders Foundation (Alf), in the presence of a number of HMC’s senior officials, was organized for the fourth consecutive year in cooperation with Alf.
    The total number of blood donors throughout the campaign was 1619, while the number of donors who came to donate at the Blood Donor Center reached 2172. Another 156 participants donated blood platelets.      
    The campaign was part of the Blood Donor Center’s efforts aimed at fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation throughout the community by continuously introducing a number of new programs and awareness events.
    “During the campaign we organized a series of blood donation events in shopping malls and other prominent locations around the country. We also took our campaign to national organizations as well as social and cultural centers with huge number of visitors taking part,” said Ms. Siddiqa Al-Mahmoudi, Medical Manager of HMC’s Blood Donor Center.
    The campaign was also part of the center’s efforts to attract blood donors and enrich the blood bank stocks in order to meet both its urgent and continuous needs of blood supplies and blood products, especially the rare types like O- (O negative) blood group.     
    “The campaign was also successful because we made use of our mobile donor units, taking the campaign trail to people. We also received support from our nursing, administrative and technical staff throughout the campaign. Display screens were set up at all locations featuring promotional and awareness messages to encourage the public to donate blood. Campaign staff also distributed posters and brochures, as well as issued recognition certificates to every donor,” added Ms. Al-Mahmoudi.
