Since opening formally in December 2012, activity at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Al Wakra Hospital (AWH) has continued to rise, with increasing number of patients taking advantage of the hospital’s highly specialized services.
With nearly 3,000 staff, including 217 doctors working across a wide variety of medical specialties, AWH offers patients dedicated, specialized care and a full range of services including pediatrics, dentistry, dermatology, burns, diabetes and surgery.
Mr. Wilson Ross, Acting Chief Executive Officer of AWH, highlighted the impact the hospital has made in and around Al Wakra. “The local community has benefitted greatly since the opening of the hospital as they are now able to access a full range of secondary and tertiary healthcare services close to home, and no longer need to travel to Doha for much of their hospital care.”
In the past two years, AWH has expanded its capacity and introduced new services, with significant activity growth across many areas. These include:
• Seventy-seven percent increase in the number of babies delivered in the Labor Ward in 2014 compared to 2013, with 2,077 babies born in 2013, versus 3,673 births in 2014.
• Activity at AWH’s Outpatient Department increased from 80,052 visits in 2013 to 118,660 visits in 2014, a 48 percent increase in activity.
• 170,667 visits were made to AWH’s Emergency Department in 2013, rising to 302,325 in 2014, representing a 77 percent increase.
Dr. Mahmoud Al Heidous, Acting Medical Director at AWH, said: “We have seen extensive growth across many areas, including both an increase in the number of patients we care for and an expansion of the range of services we offer. A number of key services have also been established at Al Wakra, notably HMC’s dedicated Burns Unit and a new National Diabetes Center. The introduction of these specialist services at Al Wakra highlights the progress the hospital has made and is evidence of our commitment to delivering the safest, most effective and most compassionate care to our patients.”
HMC’s specialist Burns Unit was relocated to a state-of-the-art facility at AWH in February 2014, having been previously situated at Rumailah Hospital. Burns patients now benefit by having access to a modern, purpose-built facility with increased bed capacity, highly trained burns experts and access to other specialist services provided at the hospital.
Diabetic patients in the local community can now receive the care they need closer to home thanks to the opening of the National Diabetes Center in October 2014. Located on the ground floor of the Outpatient Department, the center provides access to specialized diabetes care services in one location. Approximately 800 patient visits per month are expected at the new facility which is modelled on the National Diabetes Center at Hamad General Hospital, which opened in March 2014.
In May 2014, AWH successfully achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), which recognizes high quality healthcare organizations around the world. This achievement now means all HMC hospitals, as well as the Ambulance Service and Home Healthcare Service, have been accredited by JCI.
