More than 300 healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians and other allied health professionals recently attended an educational event organized by the Nursing Department at Hamad General Hospital (HGH) to highlight best nursing practices in the care of patients undergoing liver transplant surgery.
Ms. Amal Kamel Ali, Director of Nursing, Surgical Units and Lithotripsy, HGH said, “This is a unique event which serves as a valuable teaching intervention designed to promote up-to-date, evidence-based nursing practice and high-quality patient care. The event will provide nursing professionals with the latest medical knowledge with the ultimate aim of enhancing patient outcomes.”
The event was held under the theme: “Liver Transplant: The Journey,” and showcased a variety of insightful presentations by nurses and physicians highlighting topics such as the latest management techniques in pre-operative and post-operative care and challenges and recommendations in caring for liver patients recovering from liver transplant surgery at HGH.
“The main idea behind this event is to recognize nurses who have demonstrated excellence in nursing care and allow them to share their expertise with other healthcare professionals. The sharing of experiences, coupled with the latest evidence-based research findings, will positively affect delivery of care to our patients,” Ms. Ali added.
Commenting on the significance of this event for surgical nurses, Ms. Ali said nurses form the backbone of a surgical team. “Surgical nurses work in a very challenging environment, where they often take key roles in life-saving surgical procedures. They are responsible for educating patients on the procedures, provide for medication and play an important role in their treatment journey. We therefore consider it of utmost importance to highlight their role at a gathering like this where they can participate in open discussions with cross-unit and cross-division healthcare professionals to learn effective ways and identify the best strategies to improve the patient’s experience.”
The event also highlighted local and international nursing healthcare trends and current research initiatives pertinent to liver transplant.
This is the second nursing grand round held at HMC recently and is aimed to enhance the level of nursing care provided to all patients at HMC hospitals.
