This week Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Women’s Wellness and
Research Center opened its Gynecology Day Surgery Unit for women
requiring specialist gynecological procedures that do not necessitate an
overnight stay in hospital.
Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari, Acting Chief
Medical Officer for HMC, said the Women’s Wellness and Research Center
is helping to address the growing need for more comprehensive
patient-focused medical services for women in Qatar. He said: “The
continued opening of new services at our Medical City hospitals
reinforces Hamad’s commitment to providing the people of Qatar with
high-quality, world-class healthcare. The Gynecology Day Surgery Unit is
revolutionizing healthcare delivery in the country by allowing patients
to have their surgery and then return home on the same day to recover.
This week marks the first day care surgeries at the Gynecology Day
Surgery Unit and is an important step towards increasing our capacity to
perform more surgeries, improving access to healthcare for patients who
require specialized care and allowing us to treat those in need more
quickly.”
Dr. Moayyad Ahmed Younis, Consultant, Obstetrics and
Gynecology at Women’s Wellness and Research Center said: “The Gynecology
Day Surgery Unit will provide many benefits to women and is considered
the best option for almost all of our patients undergoing non-complex
elective surgical procedures.”
“By providing this service for
more women, our goal is to not only help our patients achieve a safe and
successful gynecological procedure but to also preserve or improve
their quality of life,” he added.
According to Dr. Afaf Al
Ansari, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Women’s Wellness
and Research Center, evidence shows that day surgery holds several
benefits for patients, including less disruption to their personal
lives, reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections, and faster recovery
times. It also increases the availability of inpatient beds.
Dr.
Al Ansari said: “One of the biggest benefits of the Gynecology Day
Surgery Unit is that our patients will be admitted for their procedure
and discharged on the same day. This will allow them to recover in the
comfort of their own home, with their family.”
The dedicated
Gynecology Day Surgery Unit will offer state-of-the-art surgical suites,
fully equipped to perform day case surgeries including laparoscopy,
cryocautery, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, tubal ligation, cauterization,
cervical biopsy and perineal repair.
The Unit has six beds and is
situated adjacent to the operating theater suite in the Women’s
Wellness and Research Center. The unit has fully equipped surgical
suites, all with the equipment and monitoring devices necessary to
perform gynecological day case surgeries.
The Women’s Wellness
and Research Center will offer day case surgeries four times a week for
patients referred from Women’s Hospital. Women interested in day case
surgery should speak to their physician to determine if they are a
candidate.
