Doha, 03 November 2026: The Orthopedic Surgery Department at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad General Hospital (HGH) has expanded its use of advanced endoscopic spine surgery techniques. These minimally invasive procedures are used to treat selected cases of herniated discs and spinal canal stenosis in line with the highest international standards.

The technique allows complex procedures to be performed through a tiny incision measuring no more than one centimeter, improving the patient’s treatment experience compared with conventional techniques and open surgery.

Dr. Faisal Al Shammari, Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department at HMC, said the expansion of endoscopic spine surgery reflects HMC’s ongoing efforts to advance specialized services and adopt the latest international surgical technologies. This provides patients with advanced treatment options while reducing the effects associated with surgery, keeping the focus on patient safety and quality of care provided.

Dr. Basim Shaman Ameen, Consultant Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon at HMC, explained that endoscopic spine surgery involves inserting a thin tube equipped with a high-definition camera through a small incision in the patient’s back or side, depending on the location of the problem and the type of procedure required. Images displayed on a monitor allow the surgeon to clearly visualize the surgical site and use specialized instruments to precisely remove the tissue compressing the nerves.

He added that the procedure uses a continuous fluid-flow system to maintain clear visibility and a clean surgical field, alongside advanced techniques that enable rapid bleeding control. These measures help preserve the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the spine and reduce the physical strain of surgery.

He noted that endoscopic techniques are an advance on approaches that previously relied on a surgical microscope. Key benefits include less postoperative pain, less blood loss and tissue damage, and faster recovery of mobility.

He further explained that following surgery and an assessment confirming that the patient’s condition is stable, patients may be discharged on the same day without an overnight hospital stay, provided their medical condition allows. Some patients may be able to stand and walk within the first few hours after surgery. A gradual return to daily activities is recommended following the medical team’s instructions and the nature of each case.

The medical team decides whether endoscopic surgery is suitable for each patient based on the diagnosis, medical investigations, and the degree of nerve involvement, ensuring that the most suitable treatment approach is selected for every case.
