Professor David Thompson

Professor of Nursing and Director of the Centre for the Heart and Mind, Australian Catholic University 

Prior to this he was Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing, University of Leicester (2007-2010); Director and Professor of Nursing, Chinese University of Hong Kong (2002-2007); Professor of Nursing, University of York (1998-2002); Professor of Nursing, University of Hull (1994-1998); and Professor of Nursing Research (part-time), UK Department of Health (1998-2001).  He is also Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University and Professorial Fellow in Psychiatry, University of Melbourne.

For 12 years (1980-1992) he was the senior nurse of the coronary care unit at Leicester General Hospital where he developed a cardiac rehabilitation and research program.

Professor Thompson has extensive clinical and research experience in cardiac care and rehabilitation and has published over 600 papers in nursing, medical and psychological journals as well as 40 book chapters and 15 books.  He has secured research funding in excess of $60M from the NHMRC, British Heart Foundation, UK Department of Health, Medical Research Council, Hong Kong Research Grants Committee and the Hong Kong Jockey Club and industry.

According to SciVal, Professor Thompson is ranked No. 1 and No. 2 researcher in the world in Nursing Education and Heart Failure Patient Self-Care respectively. He has an h-index of >50 and >12000 citations. His major research interests are in designing and evaluating novel psychosocial interventions, developing and validating disease-specific patient-reported outcome measures and conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses in cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation.

Professor Thompson serves on major expert committees and boards, including the European Society of Cardiology, the National Heart Foundation of Australia and the NHMRC. He is editor of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and a member of the international editorial board of Heart and Heart & Lung.  He holds Fellowships of the Royal College of Nursing (1992), Florence Nightingale Foundation (1997), European Society of Cardiology (1998), American Academy of Nursing (2008) and Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (2013).
