Dr. Lori J. West, Professor of Pediatrics, Surgery, Medical Microbiology/ Immunology and Laboratory Medicine/Pathology at the University of Alberta, Canada
Dr. Lori West is a Professor of Pediatrics, Surgery, Medical Microbiology/Immunology and Laboratory Medicine/Pathology at the University of Alberta. A clinician-scientist, Dr. West has longstanding interest and expertise in paediatric heart transplantation and transplant immunology, with a focus on neonatal immune tolerance.
Her pioneering work on crossing ABO barriers led to global advancement in infant heart transplantation, and she continues in-depth exploration of ABO-glycoimmunology, especially related to organ transplantation.
She is the founding Scientific Director of the CIHR-funded Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program, a national research coalition launched in 2013 encompassing collaborations across all streams of research, with 300+ investigators at 40+ sites across Canada and internationally.
Dr. West is the past-Director of the Alberta Transplant Institute (2013-2024); past-President of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Canadian Society of Transplantation; past-Chair of the Women in Transplantation international initiative of The Transplantation Society; served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Transplantation; and is a British Society of Transplantation honorary lifetime member.
A Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Dr. West was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2022. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Transplantation and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. In March 2025, Dr. West was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
