
Mohammad Maarouf
Mohammad A. Maarouf, MD, Associate Professor
Dr. Maarouf was born in Shauahed, Syria, and grew up in Kuwait. He studied medicine at HHU Düsseldorf, Germany. He obtained his MD degree and training in Radiation Oncology from the RWTH University of Aachen. He received training and his Habilitation (Venia Legendi) in Neurosurgery from the University of Cologne.
He was appointed Deputy Director of the Department of Stereotaxy and Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Cologne in 2008. From 2013 - 2020, he was founder and head of the Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the Cologne Merheim Medical Center at Witten/Herdecke University. From 2020, he is the Director of the Division of Functional Neurosurgery at the Beta Clinic in Bonn.
Dr. Maarouf has been involved in research into stereotactic and functional neurosurgery as well as radiosurgery. He has published over 120 manuscripts, five book chapters and edited one book.
Dr. Maarouf is a renowned figure in the field of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. His expertise lies in robot-assisted stereotactic neurosurgery and the application of functional neurosurgery for treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Maarouf has made significant contributions to deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease and other extrapyramidal disorders. He evolved innovative targets for psychiatric diseases like OCD, Tourette syndrome, and depression.
His clinical and scientific endeavors extend to: (i) the stereotactic diagnosis and treatment of intracranial tumors and vascular malformations; (ii) the treatment of pain syndromes with neuromodulation; (iii) epilepsy and brain tumors by stereotactic MR-guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy.
