Dr. Esperanza Naredo, MD, PhD, is a leading rheumatologist with a distinguished career in musculoskeletal imaging and ultrasound in rheumatology. She earned her PhD with honors (cum laude) from the Complutense University of Madrid, presenting a thesis on ultrasound-based assessment of inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis. In 1995, she completed a visiting fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, USA, under Professor M. van Holsbeeck.
Dr. Naredo is a staff member at the Department of Rheumatology and a researcher at the Joint and Bone Research Unit at Fundación Jimenez Diaz University Hospital in Madrid. She also serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Internationally recognized as a pioneer in ultrasound education in rheumatology, she founded and has chaired the Ultrasound School of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology since 1996. She has organized and taught over 300 musculoskeletal ultrasound courses worldwide, collaborating with EULAR, ACR, and other scientific societies.
Her leadership roles include Chairperson of the EULAR Standing Committee on Musculoskeletal Imaging (2013–2017) and Co-chair of the OMERACT Ultrasound Group (2008–2016). She was also the lead author of the EULAR Ultrasound Scanning Guide and App published in 2016.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Naredo has authored over 250 publications in indexed international journals and contributed to 45 books or book chapters. Her work has significantly influenced clinical practice and education in musculoskeletal ultrasound worldwide.
