Assoc. Prof. PD Dr. Peter Mandl is the Director of Clinical and Epidemiology Research, Chief Consultant, and Associate Professor at the Division of Rheumatology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, a EULAR Center of Excellence and a member of the EULAR Network of Imaging Research Centers.
After graduating with honors from Semmelweis University in Budapest, he completed his doctorate in Functional Neuroscience with honors at the Nathan Kline Institute in Orangeburg, New York and at Semmelweis University, Budapest.
His research interests include the use of imaging for diagnosing, monitoring, and predicting rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, in particular, the utility of ultrasound for monitoring inflammation and structural changes in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis. Additionally, he performs comparative imaging research using cadavers, histology, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound to better understand the anatomical and histological basis of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
Dr. Mandl has served as Chairman of EMEUNET and has been a member of several EULAR committees. He has convened and is currently convening several EULAR and OMERACT taskforces focusing on various aspects of imaging. He has published over 110 peer-reviewed articles within the field of rheumatology and musculoskeletal imaging, holds an h-index of 37, and is the author of a textbook on the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the hand. He has organized and served on the faculty of several national and international musculoskeletal ultrasound courses and workshops.
