Adjunct Associate Professor Kong completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He later underwent advanced specialty training in rheumatology in Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. He has been practicing rheumatology since 2002 and currently serves as Head of the Department of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
He developed a special interest in ultrasonography during his time as a medical officer at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, Malaysia. There, he learned echocardiography and abdominal ultrasound from radiologists and cardiologists. After completing his rheumatology training, he expanded his interest into musculoskeletal and rheumatology ultrasonography.
In 2003, he was awarded the Singapore Health Manpower Development Programme Fellowship to further pursue rheumatology ultrasonography at the Academic Unit of Musculoskeletal Disease, Department of Rheumatology, Leeds General Infirmary (University of Leeds), United Kingdom, under Professor Paul Emery and Dr. Richard Wakefield. Upon returning from Leeds in 2004, he established the first dedicated rheumatology ultrasound service in Singapore. Since then, he has trained many rheumatologists in rheumatology ultrasonography both locally in Singapore and regionally.
In 2019, he led a small team of local rheumatologists in developing the musculoskeletal ultrasound curriculum and training program for credentialing under the auspices of the Chapter of Rheumatologists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He has been an invited speaker at the regional meetings and currently serves as Co-Convenor of the Imaging Special Interest Group of APLAR.
His other research interests include systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, and vasculitis. He has published many research papers and presented numerous abstracts in international meetings.
