Laura Smith
Laura is the Deputy Dean for Student Education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Leeds, UK. She is an Associate Professor with extensive academic leadership experience and has held a number of senior roles within the School of Medicine, including Director of the Leeds Institute of Medical Education, Director of Student Education, and Head of Clinical and Simulation-Based Education.
In her role as Deputy Dean, Laura plays a central part in shaping the Faculty’s strategic direction and advancing the University’s ambitions for educational excellence and societal impact. She provides strategic leadership for the development, delivery, and enhancement of a diverse education portfolio, comprising 47 accredited programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, CPD, and workforce-focused professional training. This work supports more than 4,700 students and a large academic and clinical educator community, both on campus and in practice settings.
Recognised for redefining approaches to student education, Laura has championed integration across disciplines and research, embedding a “Learn Together, Work Together” philosophy at the heart of teaching and learning. Her leadership has been pivotal in the innovation of health professions education, including the design and enhancement of curricula across clinical programmes such as the MBChB.
Beyond the University, Laura applies her academic and clinical expertise to influence external stakeholders and foster partnerships across health, education, and government. This work has strengthened connections between academia and practice, ensuring education aligns with national workforce needs and priorities.
Laura has worked in medical education since 2009 and is a registered nurse with two decades of NHS experience, specialising in Urgent Care and Emergency Medicine. Her combined clinical and academic background underpins her commitment to preparing future health professionals to thrive in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
