Nav Buttar, M.D., is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Specialized Endoscopic Innovation Team, and Vice Chair of the GI International Practice in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. For over a decade, he has led global care coordination for patients with complex conditions and helped advance Mayo’s vision of enabling seamless, patient-centered access to Mayo’s expertise across international borders.
An advanced interventional endoscopist, Dr. Buttar specializes in minimally invasive, organ-preserving therapies for gastrointestinal disorders. As former Chair of the Endoscopy Practice, he established focused interest groups and launched a cross-disciplinary Specialized Endoscopic Innovation Team with surgical and procedural colleagues to manage high- complexity cases from around the world. He is internationally known for his expertise in managing post-surgical complications and advancing endoscopic cancer management. His contributions to education, NCI-funded research and mentorship have been recognized with the “Teacher of the Year” award by the General Surgery residency program. He holds key educational and practice leadership roles within the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Buttar earned his medical degree from the University of Rajasthan, followed by surgical training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in India. He is GMC-UK registered and later immigrated to the U.S., where he completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and fellowship in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2001. He and his wife, Kiran, a dentist, have two children, both physicians in training.
