Prof. Samar Alhomoud is among one of the first female Saudi doctors in colorectal surgery. She is the President of The Saudi Society of Colon & Rectal Surgery and Chair of The Ethics Committee at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the WHO (First chair from the Middle East Region).
She is the honorary Visiting Consultant Surgeon at St. Mark' Hospital in the United Kingdom and has previously been awarded the King Abdulaziz Medal of honour of the First Class by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia in December 2018 for her outstanding contributions in the field of research and cancer.
In 2019, she was awarded the WHO Kuwait Prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and was recognized as the first Saudi national to receive such an award.
Prof. Alhomoud is a member of the Advisory Board of the CanScreen5 project at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is an executive member of Gulf Center for Cancer Control and Prevention (GCCCP).
She is also a member of the editorial committee of the World Health Organization (2020) WHO report on cancer: setting priorities, investing wisely and providing care for all, and is regarded as a regional expert in the field of colorectal cancer screening and prevention. She was also involved in drafting several national, international and WHO Regional policy statements and recommendations.
Prof. Alhomoud sits on numerous influential committees and has published several journals that have appeared in New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Lancet Oncology. She was also featured as one of the 100 most influential Saudi women in a 2017 publication of 100 Saudi Women Who Are Creating Change.
