Dr. Mahir Petkar is a Senior Consultant Histopathologist with over 20 years of experience in diagnostic pathology, education, and leadership. He joined Hamad General Hospital in September 2017, where he currently serves as Vice Chair for Anatomic Pathology within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP). He is also the Lead Histopathologist for Hepatobiliary and Upper Gastrointestinal pathology.

Dr. Petkar obtained his MD in Pathology in 2000 in India before relocating to the United Kingdom, where he completed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) and was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2006, entering the UK Specialist Register in 2007.

He started his consultant career at Broomfield Hospital, Essex, in 2007, serving as Lead Pathologist for Head and Neck Cancer in the Mid-Essex region. From 2009 to 2013, he was also Educational Supervisor for pathology trainees at Broomfield. After moving to Qatar, he served as Program Director of the Histopathology Residency Training Program at Hamad Medical Corporation between 2021 and 2024, during which time the program successfully achieved ACGME-International accreditation.

Dr. Petkar is an FRCPath Part 2 examiner and currently chairs the Anatomical Pathology Examination Subcommittee for the QBMS exam. His subspecialty expertise includes dermatopathology, hepatobiliary pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, and the application of precision medicine in cancer management.​
