Valentín García-Gutiérrez qualified in medicine at the University of Granada in 2003. He completed a residency in hematology and specialized in chemotherapy at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, Madrid. He completed his PhD and worked on the clinical hematology and bone marrow transplant ward staff, leading the programs for myeloproliferative disorders. In 2016, he took his position as associate professor of medicine at Universidad de Alcala, Spain.
Prof García-Gutiérrez has worked abroad with several respected institutions, including the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Leukemia Department and Bone marrow transplantation Program), United States; the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (Leukemia Department), Mexico City; and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (Bone Marrow Transplantation Center), United States. Prof García-Gutiérrez has been the principal investigator of more than 25 clinical trials (phases II-IV)investigating chronic myeloproliferative disorders and bone marrow transplantation.
He is also a coordinator of 6 national clinical trials in chronic myeloid leukemia. His research has appeared in over 100 international publications, contributed to 6 national guidelines, and co-authored ten book chapters. He is a frequently invited lecturer at global and national hematology congresses.
Prof García Gutiérrez is currently the President of the Spanish Chronic Myeloid Group (GELMC). He was recently appointed as Principal Investigator of the "Hematología Transactional" group in the Instituto Ramóny Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria after receiving his first projects funded through competitive calls (PI21/00877) in 2021. His research focuses on the immune characterization of onco-hematological patients receiving different treatment approaches and immune responses to infections.
