Basim Mohammad Uthman, professor of clinical neurology and neuroscience who received his M.D. from the American University of Beirut, has been a faculty member at Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar (WCM-Q) and Consultant of Neurology at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) since 2008. Prior to that, he served as faculty member at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, Departments of Neurology since 1991and Neuroscience since 1996. Prof. Uthman has taught medical and graduate courses in neurology, epilepsy and electroencephalography. His research interests include clinical studies in the treatment of epilepsy, pharmacokinetics of antiepileptic drugs, seizures in the elderly, treatment of acute seizure disorders and status epilepticus and neurostimulation for treatment of epilepsy. Dr. Uthman’s pioneering pilot studies regarding the safety and feasibility of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in humans advanced this novel method of therapy to the frontiers of modern treatment of intractable epilepsy.
Dr. Uthman served as member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida and Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. He also served as Principal Investigator, member of the Speakers Bureau or Consultant for the U.S.A. Veterans Health System and multiple manufacturers of therapies for the treatment of epilepsy. Dr. Uthman is board certified in Neurology, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology. Currently, Dr. Uthman teaches his specialty at WCM-Q and HMC. He is director of the Neurology Clerkship and vice chairman of the Department of Neurology at WCM-Q and serves as consultant neurologist at HMC and member of the Qatar Neuroscience Institute.
