Dr. Omar Elahmer

Dr. Elahmer is a Professor in virology at the faculty of Medical Technology; University of Tripoli, obtained his PhD from the Medical Microbiology Department at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1997. He is the Director of Reference Laboratory for Disease Control and head of National Influenza Centre at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) of Libya, his Laboratory is recognized by World Health Organization as country public health laboratory that has a role in Disease outbreaks, surveillance and research under the National laboratory requirements of International Health Regulations (IHR 2005).

Dr. Elahmer designated as the IHR National Focal Point for Libya and currently chairing the IHR multisectoral committee responsible for core capacities implementations among sectors related to IHR.

He is engaged in several cooperation programs with International entities (WHO, U.S Sandia National Laboratories, Georgetown University, MediLabSecure Network) in laboratory building capacities, Laboratory quality assessment and Biosafety and Biosecurity. Dr. Elahmer has published several articles in peer reviewed medical journals.
